Manuscript Critique/Evaluation
A critique deals with such things as structure, organization, research, gaps in logic, repetition, flow, suitability to audience, and clarity. It is an overview of the manuscript that identifies what is needed before it is ready for publication. At this initial stage I will provide:
· One read-through of the entire manuscript
· A written report on substantive issues, noting strengths and weaknesses and offering suggestions for improvement.
Cost: $2.50 per 1,000 words (1/4 cent per word)Substantive editing
Substantive editing involves serious, focused work on revision in consultation with the author.At this stage I will:
- Work with the author (mostly through email) for clarification and/or further information on specific areas
- Revise the manuscript according to the author’s responses
- See that paragraphs and chapters flow in a logical order, and reorganize them if needed
- Create a table of contents
- Check footnoting to insure consistency of style (it is the author’s responsibility to ensure that quotes and sources are accurate
- Return the revised manuscript to the author noting things that need his/her attention – things that the author needs to change personally
Cost: 2 cents per word
Copyediting
Copyediting tackles the manuscript line by line, paying attention to the small details.At this stage I will:
· Check grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure
· Note use of passive voice, word choice, and consistency of detail, and change as necessary
· Look for consistency of style, capitalization and clarity
Cost: 2 cents per word
Proofreading
Proofreading is done on the pages after layout, when they are ready to go to press.At this stage I will:
· Check for details that have been missed in the editing stages, such as spelling, punctuation, stylistic and serious grammatical errors
· Look for errors that have been introduced during layout, such as mistakes in numbering headers/footers, page numbers out of order
